Lesson Plan Ideas

March came in like a lion but I am not sure that it will leave like a lamb. Tests will be over soon and I hope the students will soon be able to enjoy their recess outdoors. It is clear that they have developed "Cabin Fever"

The Lesson Plan ideas that I am thinking about are hands-on, fun, integrated and stimulating. Here are some examples that came to mind:
Author Study - Ezra Jack Keats or Eric Carle
Thematic Unit - Continent, State, Neighborhood
Quilting Across the Curriculum
Bread - Culture
Shoes - Cinderella Theme
Travel - Bridges-Immigration-Migration, Country
Autobiographies -Family Tradition -Storytelling-Drama
Nature - Butterflies, Insects, Bears, Trees, Bees
Recycle -"Green Planet"
Underground Railroad, Ellis Island

  1. I like the idea of a thematic unit. I think i makes it interesting for students to see how one topic can span many subjects. It really helps to broaden the mind and forces children to use their imagination.

  2. Wow, outdoor recess! Just the idea has me itching for spring and, I'll admit, jealous. Not only do my (high school) students not have a recess (nor a gym, though I can't complain; the kids go to Chelsea Piers once a week for a few hours), but I don't either. I'd LOVE a mandated "be active!" hour a day.

Your lesson plan ideas sound great; I'm intrigued, which is a good sign. :) The Cinderella-themed shoe lesson had me thinking about how difficult it might or might not be to create a 'gender-neutral' lesson.

  3. Many boys love shoes just as much as girls, it's just sneakers! But it is worthwhile to think about how gender, race, ethnicity, culture, etc. play a role in students' cultural literacies as they come to our lesson plans!
